Seeing the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis was always on our list of things to see in Morocco. Unfortunately, getting a bus to Meknes did not workout. You see, bus tickets are so cheap that they were sold out weeks earlier when we tried purchasing them in Essaouria. We were originally hoping to spend the night in Meknes or Moulay Idriss and enjoy to slower pace of sight seeing. But when traveling, we have learned to roll with things and did the next best thing. We hired, Aziz, a driver to take us.

VOLUBILIS is one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Morocco. In 1997 it was declared a Unesco World Heritage site. We learned that only about half of the site has been excavated.

Well preserved colorful mosaics that are on the floors of the more affluent homes.  Mosaics of Medusa, Hercules and Venus can still be seen 2000 years later.  Many are still intact and beautiful, we can only image how beautiful then.

Volubilis turned out to be even better then I had expected.  We enjoyed seeing and learning about the ruins.

MOULAY IDRISS is an important religious site in northern Morocco that is less that 5km from Volubilis.  The first thing I noticed when we drove in was that there were no women to be seen.  Just men, mostly those just sitting having their mid-day coffee, or was it still there morning coffee? Honestly, it was a little strange.

MEKNES is an imperial city that is full of charm.  Many tourists over it enroute to Fes.  I glad we had the opportunity to stop and explore Meknes, even if it was just a short time.  Our driver took us on a quick drive around Meknes before stopping for lunch.  After lunch we headed around the corner to visit Dar Jamai Museum, home of the former sultan.  We took a quick look, admiring the beauty.  It is so elegant, the intricacy of the floor tiles, the chandelier and the beautiful white arches.

From there we moved on to the medina.  We had a lot of fun in the Meknes medina, it was so clean and bright.  We even picked up a few things.
