Being locked in a room with an exciting mystery scenario and having to solve a series of clues in order to escape your predicament within 60 minutes would be a challenge; we the Family Bucketeers were up for the challenge.  Over the past year we have faced many challenges head on, and have come out stronger and wiser than ever. This…should be…easy for us.

We were very excited to be invited by The Mystery Room Escape (in Johor Bahru, Malaysia) to test our wits and smarts, to attempt an “escape” from one of the mystery rooms. We called a taxi, but the driver didn’t know where we were going, so we called another. Again, the driver didn’t know where the business was and did not understand the address we had given him, but this time the taxi driver called and spoke to Alicia who provided him with directions.  By the time we arrived at The Mystery Escape Room we were 20 minutes late.  As the sessions run every 90 minutes we were sure there would not be enough time for us to complete our challenge.  Fortunately, Alicia quickly orientated us and explained the objectives of the game, provided us with Walkie Talkies and left us locked in the dimly lit challenge room, with clues all around us.

We had chosen “The Curse of Pharaoh” adventure mystery, and there we stood, frozen, listening to the eerie music and sound effects that drifted into the room, as we began our adventure.  We were not calm in the least….   I could hear and see the clock ticking down the seconds.  Our eyes were darting around the room, looking for anything that may be a clue.  Only 59 more minutes to solve the mystery and make it out alive.  Can we do it?   Aurora grabbed my hand tightly, not leaving my side.  After a short bit, Noah broke the silence, which lead us to finding and understanding the first clue.

Slowly we solved the “mystery” clue by clue, step by step as we moved through the small confined, oddly designed and clue filled rooms. At times we felt like James Bond and other times like Indiana Jones.

Unfortunately, we picked a mystery room that had a difficulty level of five out of five, the most challenging room possible!!!  We needed to Walkie Talkie in for many “life line hints”, to survive.   Thankfully Alicia and Tia we there when we got stuck, to nudge us along.

We didn’t solve the mystery and escape in our allotted 60 minutes, it took us 89 minutes and about 40 seconds, but we are ok with that, we did it!!!  At the end we got our family photo taken on a Polaroid camera and got posted to the wall in the office along with the many other groups and families who have been to The Mystery Escape Room.  Sorry, we can’t spill the beans on details, we don’t want to spoil the surprise or the challenge for those who are yet to give it a go. This was a fun and entertaining family and team building experience.  We would definitely go back again to try another one of The Mystery Room’s challenges. Give it a try next time you are in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.  Maybe you will beat our 89 minute time?
